Beginning in the Han Dynasty, the Chinese hunted extensively for seawater pearls in the South China Sea. The most powerful pirate fleets of East Asia were those of Chinese pirates during the early 19th century. By 1804, Zheng Yi and his wife formed a pirate coalition that consisted of over ten thousand men.
